Oakmoor School in Bordon won its first Aldershot & Farnborough District Cup in 24 years when its Year 10 boys came from behind to beat Salesian College 2-1 in the final at Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium.
A bye to the quarter-finals had been followed by a 6-1 win at Alderwood, with Garry Williams scoring all six goals, and a 2-1 comeback victory at home to Calthorpe Park in the semi-finals, with strikes from Rishon Maxmilan and Williams.
Salesian beat Oakmoor 2-0 in their league fixture, and the school’s last triumph came when it was Mill Chase, so the team had recent form and the weight of history to overcome if they were to become the first Oakmoor team to lift a District Cup.
In the first half Oakmoor dominated the ball, but Salesian took a 1-0 lead into the interval. The second period started the way the first ended, with Oakmoor on the front foot, and five minutes in a rash tackle on winger Maxmilan gave the referee no option but to point to the spot. Williams slotted away the penalty to level the score.
The next 20 minutes were end to end and Salesian came back strongly, with Oakmoor goalkeeper Sebastian Opara pulling off a string of saves he had no right to make to keep his side in the game.
Then came the moment of magic for which Oakmoor were hoping. The ball fell to Williams at the edge of the box, and he feinted one way before shifting the ball on to his right foot and bending it round an oncoming defender into the far right corner of the net for a goal worthy of winning any football match.
Congratulating the champions, Oakmoor’s head of PE David Oliver said: “They were exceptional - the perfect team performance in the biggest game of their school lives.”
