TWO men have denied breaking immigration laws after 23 illegal Chinese immigrants were found at a laundry in Alton.

Qing Wu, 41, from Sandhurst in Berkshire, and Man Kung Wong, 44, from Portsmouth, are accused of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Both denied the charges when they appeared last week at Winchester Crown Court. The accusation follows a joint inquiry by Hampshire police and the UK Borders Agency at the Universal Chinese Laundry in Caker Stream Road on the Mill Lane trading estate in January. Mr Wu and Mr Wong are due to stand trial next year.

The laundry has a history. In September 2005 two laundry lorries were destroyed by fire in suspicious circumstances, and in August 2006 a man suffered two broken arms when four people with baseball bats burst into the laundry when he was working and attacked him.
