ANOTHER lorry struck the Wrecclesham railway bridge on Friday morning and sliced its roof off, bringing rush-hour traffic to a halt.

The latest incident occurred at around 7am, when an HGV carrying what appears to be home appliances misjudged the height of the bridge approaching from the Coxbridge roundabout.

It left a thin sheet of razor-sharp metal strewn across the A325 Wrecclesham Hill, as well as a pavement used by dozens of schoolchildren every morning at the junction with Weydon Lane.

It is at least the third HGV to strike the bridge this year, but differs from the previous two incidents in that this time the lorry was travelling south - not north-bound.

The police and Network Rail are believed to have attended the scene, but no injuries have been reported. The A325 was partially blocked in both directions near River Lane, but the road was clear as of around 9.30am.It comes amid growing calls for urgent safety improvements on the A325 in Wrecclesham following the death of pedestrian Amy Harris earlier this year and a flurry of HGVs hitting the bridge in recent months.Responding to the latest incident, local councillor Pat Frost said on behalf of campaign group Wrecclesham Village Voice: “Yet another accident with a vehicle hitting the bridge – these type of incidents are getting more frequent – it can only be a matter of time before something much more serious happens under the bridge and brings into sharp focus the urgent need for a Wrecclesham relief road."For the sake of the people of Wrecclesham we must reduce the heavy traffic on the A325."
