The owner of an animal sanctuary near Farnham which lost three birds in a devastating fire has thanked well-wishers with an online appeal raising £12,000 and counting.

Anita Pye has witnessed an “extraordinary outpouring of support” after the main shed at Orchard Farm Animal Sanctuary went up in flames around 4.30pm on Thursday.

Firefighters prevented flames from spreading to an adjacent barn and worked alongside owners to bring animals to safety at the site in Bucks Horn Oak.

But the rescue operation was “particularly distressing” as some of the terrified animals froze in fear and refused to leave the burning building, while some even attempted to return.

“This farm provides a loving forever home for animals in desperate need, particularly those at risk at slaughter,” said a friend of Anita, who is a “little in shock” following the harrowing experience.

“For many of its residents, the sanctuary represents a second chance at life.

“The loss of the building has left the sanctuary facing a major recovery operation, with the immediate priority being to secure the fire-damaged area, protect the surviving animals and provide emergency shelter.”

While the immediate focus is on protecting the animals and restoring essential shelter, the full financial impact of the fire is not yet known with the cause not yet confirmed.

But the response has been heart-warming with £4,000 being donated to an emergency appeal within 24 hours of its launch with plenty of tradespeople also offering help.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire & Rescue Authority said crews from Rushmoor, Bordon and Surrey FRS were deployed with firefighters using jets to stop the blaze and attending police managing traffic.

Ambulance paramedics also treated a person for smoke inhalation, with a fire crew returning the next day to conduct a re-inspection.
