The annual blockbust annual Bank Holiday air and motor show – Wings and Wheels – went from glorious sunshine on Saturday to non-stop rain on Sunday last weekend.
Crowds on the first day were treated to the full five-hour flying displays and two-hour motoring demonstrations by supercars around the BBC Top Gear track at Dunsfold Aerodrome.
The Dunkirk spirit prevailed on Sunday, when a brave few took to the skies, but many acts remained grounded for health and safety reasons.
A cheer went up on Saturday, as headliners the Red Arrows powered overhead in nine-Hawk formation, for a thrilling display to mark the RAF’s 100th anniversary year.
Turning the clock back, a Lancaster, one of the RAF’s most famous aircraft, roared past with two Spitfires, forming the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, to commemorate the thousands of servicemen and women, who gave their lives for their country in the darkest hours of WWII.
The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment’s Tigers flagship team made a grand entrance, parchuting into the arena. A cavalcade of jeeps, tanks, trucks and motorbikes displayed their might, quickly followed by fast and furious motoring demonstrations by Weybridge’s Brooklands Museum.
The show opened an hour early at 8am on Sunday in a race against the weather
Barnstorming pilot Brendan O’Brien took off in the Otto helicopter, dancing along the crowd line in daring manoeuvres with smoke and fireworks. The Blades performed an outstanding aerobatic display before the Chinook helicopter got the crowds doing a Mexican umbrella wave.
With high winds and heavy rain, the remaining displays took the decision to cancel as conditions became dangerous, but O’Brien and Melvyn Hiscock kept everyone’s spirits up with spoof commentary to a ‘stealth aircraft’ display, which included a ground-shaking pyrotechnics finale, before the decision to close the show was taken at 3pm.
Event director Jamie McAllister, said: “Wings and Wheels was definitely an event of two halves.
“Sunday was certainly challenging and I am incredibly proud of the way the team adapted the show to ensure we were able to deliver as much as possible safely to the fantastic crowd that braved the weather. Feedback was exceptional and we truly appreciate the support all our visitors showed.”
