ALTON Swimming Club were at the Quays, Southampton, for the final weekend of the Hampshire Championships.

This time, the competition switched to the older swimmers: the adults and under-17s. The races were fast and the competition hard, several of the swimmers having set national qualifying times this year.

Stuart McHarg topped the honours board for Alton with excellent victories in the men's open 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. He also collected third places in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

His younger brother, John McHarg, who had distinguished himself at the junior championships earlier in the month, swam for the under-17s and set another new club record, this time in the 200m freestyle, as well as recording personal best times in the gruelling 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Zoe Coles, swimming in the open competition, continued her fine form for Alton, setting new club records in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, and coming fifth overall in the latter event.

Team-mate Kristie Garrett swam the 50m, 100m and muscle-aching 200m breaststroke and finished commendably in each race.

In the energy-sapping long races, Kelly Smith and Catherine Cooper both clocked personal bests in the 200m freestyle, with Rebecca Ford coming sixth in the 200m individual medley.

Charlotte Marvin came fourth in the 100m breaststroke and James Gay claimed fourth and fifth in the 50m and 100m breaststroke respectively.

The Alton squad found it tough going in this gala, but set to it with their usual determination and good humour.
