ALTON Town Council representatives returned from the Hampshire Association of Local Councils annual meeting with two communication awards.

During the meeting, which took place at the Victoria Hall in Hartley Wintney last month, town council leader Peter Hicks picked up an award for The Altonian, which was named best parish or town council newsletter.

Mr Hicks said: “I am really pleased that The Altonian has been recognised by award sponsors Microshade VSM and by our colleagues in Hampshire for its informative yet friendly style in communicating with residents. In an age of digital media, it is a timely reminder that we must continue to ensure that we can reach those who do not have access to the internet.”

The town council was also recognised for its improved online presence, receiving the award for best use of social media in public engagement for its Facebook page.

Earlier this year, at Alton’s annual parish meeting, a number of residents asked the council to be more proactive in respect of social media. In response, the town council’s policy and resources committee approved a communications and social media policy for the council which prompted a more detailed focus on the council’s digital profile and has included a social media training session for members.

Collecting the award on behalf of the council, town clerk Leah Coney said: “The town hall has worked hard to increase the council’s exposure on Facebook, as well as posting regular updates on Twitter and compiling a weekly round-up blog.

“This award is proof that the sector has recognised the effort that has gone in to improving our social media profile.”

In continuing its commitment to improving communications, the town hall has also been working on upgrading its website.
