CALLING all knitters who can knit simple plain and purl! BLISS, the premature baby charity. is seeking volunteers to make little cardies, hats, boots and small blankets, and a selection of very easy patterns is available.

Farnham United Reformed Church is hosting a drop-in session on Tuesday, February 20, from 10am to 11.30am at the Spire Cafe in South Street. Visitors can meet the organisers, look at sample knits and pick up free patterns.

The knitting scheme is run by BLISS the charity that helps babies born too soon, too small or too sick to cope on their own.

Haslemere BLISS launched the scheme in a letter published in all editions of the Herald when the Royal Surrey baby unit asked for little hats. Within a week there were 20 people signed up and now almost 30 years later there are over 200 BLISS knitters in Haslemere, Farnham, Godalming and all over the three counties borders.

They are so prolific that BLISS is able to help neonatal units throughout the south of England and beyond.

As well as little clothes and blankets, the knitters make cheerful red Christmas stockings. In December BLISS donated over 600 stockings to 30 hospitals from Truro in the west to St Leonards in the east plus others in London and further afield.

Postage costs for several years will be covered by a generous donation from Haslemere Waitrose and the charity would like to thank everyone who dropped their green token into the BLISS box in December.
