Alton suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of local rivals Hook & Newnham Basics on Saturday, ending the Townsmen's 100 per cent record.

Despite winning the toss for the fifth consecutive week, things could not have started any worse for Alton, with the first five batsmen back in the pavilion for less than 30 runs.

Some excellent bowling from Kaminsky and Williams ended any realistic hopes Alton had of posting a testing target for the home batsmen.

Nevertheless, for the second week running, the partnership between Paddy Heffernan and Howard Gadsby was the highlight of the innings. The two left-handers started slowly and increased the tempo steadily with some cracking shots all round the ground.

Gadsby's invaluable 45 was ended when he mis-timed a drive to be caught at point. Heffernan was eventually last man out for a masterly 57.

The total of 168 was reduced to a target of 152 off 45 overs, due to a short delay for rain.

The result never looked in doubt, despite some accurate bowling from young Aussie Hayden Jackson who beat the bat frequently and was unlucky to go wicketless. Ben Rotheram took the only wicket to fall, but at some cost. He went for 22 in his final over. Hook opener Lovelock batted throughout for 89 not out.

This was a disappointing result, but Alton will be looking to bounce back this Saturday against Lymington II at Jubilee Playing Fields.
