PETERSFIELD Town Council has thrown its moral support behind the striving ambitions of Petersfield Youth Theatre's 'big plan'. Detailing intentions to create an all-encompassing £2m community arts venue – known as 'The Space' at this formative stage – Nik Ashton, Petersfield Youth Theatre's artistic director spoke to town councillors at the Festival Hall. Seeking support from the town council in a variety of ways for the project, Mr Ashton left happy. Now a professional actor, and a founding member of Petersfield Youth Theatre, Mr Ashton told of his desire to "give something back" to the community which acted as a "catalyst" to his career. And what a gift it would be, as he enthusiastically outlined the initial brief, which would fulfil the needs not only of Petersfield Youth Theatre but for other groups in the vicinity, providing a cultural hub for the area. "There are so many people with needs and we hope we can fulfil those needs," said Mr Ashton. Proposals include a multi-purpose performance studio, rehearsal room, two dance studios, a set construction workshop, set storage, a costume construction area, costume storage, and music rooms. He stressed that the building was to "make and create"; that it was not intended as a performance space, or designed to be in competition with other venues within the town. Mr Ashton also revealed that Petersfield Youth Theatre has applied for a National Lottery grant to the tune of £500,000, but are waiting to hear from Camelot. When asked about the potential location of the building, Mr Ashton continued: "When it comes to planning I know that this building doesn't fit in East Hampshire District Council's current plan until 2011. "There is nowhere within the current settlement boundary of Petersfield that could accommodate this building," he said. After the town council advised PYT that it had no suitable land for a building of 'The Space', mayor Paul Molloy concluded the matter. "There certainly is a need for a building of this kind. I'm not sure how we can help you, but we will certainly give you our moral support."
