MORE than 150 people enjoyed a morning of readings and preachings, as St Paul’s Church in Tongham celebrated its 150th birthday in a special centenary service in January.

In total there was 115 adults and 47 children in attendance, including a number of parish councillors.

The church windows were decorated by all the groups within the church, which included the Sunday school, St Paul’s Infants, youth groups, coffee plus (mums and babies), the refreshments team, Jamboree club and many more.

The Bishop of Guildford, the Rt Rev Andrew Watson, gave an enjoyable and interesting sermon. Both the bishop and the vicar of St Paul’s, Rev Claire Holt, were delighted with the turn out, there was standing room only at one point until the children went out to their groups in the Old School Hall.

After the service Margaret Murrey, satisfied visitors with a sparkling sherry and filled their inner needs with a scrumptious roast beef lunch, plus coffee and chocolates.

She said: “It went very well, and went on longer then we had expected. But it was an excellent turnout and the sherry was enjoyed before the lunch, which was good. It was a very successful event.

“Many thanks are due to all who helped both in the planning and lead up to the event, and to all those who helped on the day – too many to name.”
