THE A287 Frensham Road was closed on Wednesday, after a perilous patch of ice caused by a burst water main led to a succession of crashes on the A287 south of Farnham.
According to motorcyclist Kieran Copleston-Jobling, he was travelling along the A287 Frensham Road at around 6.40am, when he hit the ice between the junctions with Fifield Lane and Kennel Lane and came off his bike.
Kieran told The Herald: “The car in front of me slammed its brakes on so I put my brakes on, slid on the ice and I went flying. The car in front didn’t stop, but two cars behind me smashed together, and another one ended up in a bush.”
He added the ice had been caused by a “burst water main” and a fellow member of the ‘Farnham Rants’ Facebook group, responding to Kieran’s post, said he spotted water “flowing across the road” at 10.30pm the previous night (Tuesday).
Paul Mann, South East Water’s distribution manager, confirmed the company was alerted to the problem by police shortly before 10am on Wednesday, and discovered a four inch water main had burst.
He added the road was closed to allow the repair to be carried out “due to the location of the burst main and for the safety of motorists and our workforce”. The fire and ambulance service also attended the scene of the incident.
