Young entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds could get a helping hand through a bursary scheme launched by Farnham Town Council.

Five young people will receive a handout through the Stewart Dakers Bursary with the council setting aside £2,500 for a three-year scholarship programme.

The bursary – named in honour of the late FTC employee and youth advocate, Stewart Dakers – will also provide young people with the tools and opportunities to launch their own business at the forthcoming Farnham Children’s Business Fair (CBF).

The bursary will fund five young entrepreneurs each year while the handout will help the recipients to hone their business ideas and gain real-world experience.

The scholarship includes an £80 investment in their business, access to an online video-based learning programme, one-to-one mentorship and a stand at the CBF worth £90.

“The bursary honours Stewart Dakers, who sadly passed away at the end of 2024,” said FTC spokesperson, Cllr Graham White.

“Stewart was known for his dedication to the Farnham community, serving as a park ranger, youth worker and trustee at 40 Degreez youth centre.

“He always looked to nurture life skills and create opportunities for young people, and was also an active participant in the local arts scene.”

Cllr White added: “Stewart made a lasting impact on many young lives so we are proud to continue his legacy through this bursary, inspiring and empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

The council has been a strong support of CBFs since 2021 and has provided gazebos and equipment for the Farnham Maltings events.

They have supported eight of nine fairs, to date, with the mayor or deputy mayor playing an integral role in judging the best business stalls.

This year’s CBFs are on July 5 and December 6, for more details about the Stewart Dakers Bursary visit https://childrensbusinessfair.co.uk/
