THE past few weeks have been a busy time for Farnham Local Food (FLF), not just with growing vegetables, and looking after the two sites in Dippenhall and Runfold - there have also been quite a few events.
On Saturday, September 30, FLF joined many other local and regional food producers at the Farnham Food Festival, both to raise awareness of the project and to sell its home-grown vegetables and herbs. There was a wonderful buzz in Castle Street and it was great talking to all the people who visited FLF’s stall.
The following day, FLF took part in a national open day for CSA (community-supported agriculture) projects. It opened the farm gates at its West Farm location in Runfold for the first time since it started cultivating the site at the start of the year.
Visitors were encouraged to walk around, look at the different crops being grown and talk to the growers. There was an activity trail for children, a bush craft stall and a chance to pick your own pumpkin.
One of the polytunnels had been turned into a real social hub, with tea, cakes and food being served, more children’s activities and a make-your-own-bag area.
FLF was also pleased to have Mill Farm Organic on site, serving sausage rolls and burgers using home-reared meat. There was much positive feedback about the site and the project with many people showing a real interest.
A particular high point for Farnham Local Food was winning the Surrey Life Food and Drink award for the ‘Services to the community’ earlier in September. The jury was looking for food initiatives that inspire and make a difference to local communities.
Marlies van den Hurk, of Farnham Local Food, said: “It was the first time FLF entered the competition and we are truly over the moon to have won. It has been a really eventful and exciting time.”
