MORE than 3,500 people have signed an online petition calling for fairer road funding which could see improvements to road conditions in and around Farnham.

Set up by Surrey county councillor Edward Hawkins and backed by campaign group Wrecclesham Village Voice, the petition is calling upon the Government to reform its Fairer Funding Formula.

This formula decides how much money should be given to each local authority for road repairs based upon length, without taking into account usage.

Mr Hawkins, councillor for Heatherside & Parkside, said: “No matter what other services are delivered by Surrey County Council, we all use the roads.

“There is a view that if the deterioration of Surrey’s roads is allowed to continue, this could have an impact on Surrey’s future economic productivity.”

Wyatt Ramsdale, the Waverley borough councillor for Wrecclesham and Rowledge who helped establish Wrecclesham Village Voice last year, added: “Everyone in Surrey who is concerned about the condition of our roads should follow the link and sign the petition.”

Another of the group’s campaigners, Lynley Griffiths also commended the petition, commenting that a revised funding criteria based on road usage “appears non-discriminatory and also quickly adaptable to changes in road usage”.
