A CHRISTMAS tree created by Wrecclesham Village Voice (WVV) has been crowned the winner of this year’s St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival.
WVV’s winning tree was based on this year’s World War One commemorations in Wrecclesham and was titled Lest We Forget... 100 years at Christmas 2018.
The tree was voted as the best overall by the community, with people describing it as a “special tree”, “a timeless reminder”, “poignant” and “very moving”.
The Herald donated around 20 newspapers to WVV, used to wrap the 49 presents under the tree.
There was one gift for each of the World War One soldiers named on the war memorial.
Each gift was tagged with the name, age, last- known address in or near Wrecclesham and a few family details.
Weydon School also lent WVV its There But Not There Soldier.
St Peter’s Primary School’s tree was awarded second place at the festival, which was held on December 15 and 16.
Trees were designed by local groups, organisations and individuals from the village, and 25 trees were created as part of the festival.
Reverend Jacqueline Drake-Smith thanked everyone who participated and announced the winner, as voted for by everyone who attended.
St Peter’s Christmas Tree Festival was the brainchild of Wendy Coxall and this year’s event was run by Christopher Ellis and his team.
