MORE used to a quieter age of motoring, several classic cars on their way to the annual White Dove Show on Sunday, August 14, got caught up in traffic jams on the A31 possibly caused by members of the Ahmadiyya Muslims leaving their annual Jalsa Salana at East Worldham.
John Turner, organiser of the White Dove Classic Car and Motor Show, who uses the proceeds to raise money for the Phyliss Tuckwell Hospice at Farnham, said: “Several of our exhibitors got caught up in the jam which blocked the A31.
“The car we bought last year for the nurses at the hospice took an hour-and-a- half to come to our show from Farnham.
“I gather it was the Jalsa traffic but this has never happened before as they usually hold their convention later in the month. We always hold our show on the second Sunday in August.”
The show now in its 12th year was, as always, a huge success helped by hot sunny weather with a wonderful line up of classic cars - the oldest a 1920s Singer - and motor bikes around Kingsley Sports Ground.
One of the oldest motor bikes was a 1913 Douglas owned by Mr Turner and after the show he rode it around the grounds to prove how well it can still perform although it is 104 years old.
What he described as a “good number of visitors” took time to enjoy the classic line-up and chat with the owners as well as enjoying the variety of refreshments on sale.
Later Dale Fontaine performed his very popular Elvis Show and there was more music from the Golden Shadows.
Although it is only held one day a year the show takes a lot of organising mainly by Mr Turner but he has a small committee plus his family to help and on the day a band of volunteers who keep things running smoothly.
He has been holding the White Dove Show for the as a thank you to them for the care they gave his father Dudley and last year he raised £15,000, a lot of it due to “very generous sponsors.”
