Visitors to Farnham's Lion and Lamb Yard shopping precinct may have noticed some colourful new additions hanging overhead.

The eye-catching fabric panels are part of a new public artwork called Fleeting, created by local textile artist Hermione Thomson for Farnham Craft Month.

And there's more to them than meets the eye, with the naturally dyed fabrics designed to move in the breeze, change with the light and gradually fade throughout October.

The installation was officially unveiled last week with the Mayor and Mayoress of Farnham, Cllr Graham White and Judy White, Town Crier Michael Stephens and members of the local creative community attending the launch.

The Mayor thanked Jamestown for looking after what he described as Farnham's "jewel in the crown", praising the company's hands-on approach to supporting Lion and Lamb Yard and the town's creative heritage.

Made from regenerative and natural materials, the textile panels are screen-printed with abstract images inspired by the shadows and shapes of foliage found in and around Farnham.

The installation is part of Thomson's wider collection, The Impermanence of Things, which explores seasonal change, loss and renewal.

It also draws on the Japanese philosophy of mono no aware – an awareness of the passing nature of life and the beauty of fleeting moments.

Ms Thomson said: "Fleeting is intended to encourage audiences to reflect on the changing nature of our surroundings and our own experiences.

"By working with natural materials and allowing the piece to alter over time, I wanted the installation to become part of the landscape, quietly shifting, fading, and transforming throughout Farnham Craft Month."

The artwork also takes inspiration from Farnham's rich craft heritage.

Earlier this year, Ms Thomsonvisited the Crafts Study Centre to explore its archives, including textile prints by Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher, who worked together on designs in the 1920s.

She was particularly interested in their rust prints and textured designs, as well as the work of textile designer Ethel Mairet and her 1916 book, A Book on Vegetable Dyes.

Hermione said the research helped shape the ideas behind Fleeting.

During Farnham Craft Month, she will also exhibit work in one of Lion and Lamb Yard's units, giving visitors another opportunity to explore the processes and ideas behind the installation.
