THE Taro Centre car park is an accident waiting to happen, it was claimed this week.
And now Liss parish councillor Paddy Payne is calling for safety measures before a child is hurt crossing the road.
Mr Payne was speaking at Liss Parish Council on Monday night when members were commenting on access to East Hampshire District Council's leisure centres.
Mr Payne told The Herald he was concerned when he took children to the centre because there were no footways or pedestrian crossings from the two sections of the car park to the main door of the centre.
"Children tend to want to run and it's difficult to shepherd them safely across the car park, especially when you have a group. It always terrifies me."
He said the problem was exacerbated by the poor vision for motorists arriving round the bend in the road.
"I'm suggesting we have walkways and pavements. Ideally you should be able to get to your car without going on the road except where you have to cross to the further section of the car park. There should be pedestrian crossings there," Mr Payne told The Herald.
There should also be a set-down area in front of the main doors, he claimed, which could also help to improve safety.
"At the moment I don't think the car park at the Taro is safe. It is an accident waiting to happen," he claimed.
Roger Mullenger told Liss parish councillors he did not believe the standard of maintenance at the Taro was adequate. He pointed out that the lift for the disabled was out of action for a long period earlier this year.
Jan Harmel told the meeting she thought the gym was too crowded with equipment. "I don't think it is safe," she said.
EHDC's corporate director (environment), Lynda Peacock, said: "All these comments will be fed back to us and will be very helpful when we prepare the specification for the next contract and also in the running of the current one, and we are very grateful to parish councillors for taking the trouble to respond."
