A teenager accused of murdering 15-year-old Luis Guembes has denied stabbing the schoolboy, despite recording a video in which he allegedly appeared to admit carrying out the attack.
Defendant 1, who was 16 at the time of Farnham schoolboy Luis’s death, told the court he had lied in the recording because he was frightened of his co-defendant and wanted to convince him he had taken part.
The teenager was subjected to lengthy cross-examination as he gave his account of the events leading up to the fatal stabbing in Guildford’s Stoke Park on January 19.
He denied stabbing Luis or taking part in a planned robbery, insisting he had tried to prevent violence.
Defendant 1 told the court he had gone to Defendant 2’s address after being asked to help with something, but claimed he had no idea there was a plan to rob anyone.
He described how Defendant 2 had become frustrated while trying to contact a man over compensation for a broken phone.
Defendant 1 said he heard his co-defendant threaten to “chef” the man, which he understood to mean slashing him.
He said the comment frightened him, although he did not believe he would be involved in anything violent.
His account was challenged by Tim Forte KC, representing Defendant 2, who questioned him about their relationship, communications before the incident and his reasons for meeting Luis.
Defendant 1 maintained he had not agreed to take part in a robbery, claiming he only later discovered that Defendant 2 intended to snatch Luis’s phone.
He said he had questioned what would happen to the phone and suggested returning it to avoid a confrontation.
Mr Forte suggested Defendant 1 had been actively involved in bringing Luis to woodland near Wildwood car park, rather than simply acting as a mediator or lookout.
The barrister also questioned him about wearing a balaclava and gloves, suggesting these were consistent with preparing for a robbery and concealing his identity or fingerprints.
Defendant 1 insisted he had worn them because it was cold and he was travelling by bicycle.
A significant part of the cross-examination focused on a video Defendant 1 recorded minutes after leaving the scene.
In the recording, he appeared to say: “I [expletive] stabbed him bro”, before suggesting Defendant 2 may also have stabbed Luis.
Mr Forte suggested the recording amounted to a genuine admission made shortly after the attack, challenging Defendant 1’s claim that he had been lying.
But Defendant 1 insisted the words were untrue.
He claimed he had made the video on the spur of the moment to convince Defendant 2 that he had done what was expected of him.
He said he feared the consequences of not helping his co-defendant and wanted to give the impression he had been involved rather than simply watching events unfold.
Asked about his words in the recording, he replied: “I was lying.”
He told the court he later watched the video at home, realised it was untrue and deleted it. He denied sending it to Defendant 2.
Mr Forte also questioned him about a Snapchat message referring to kicking someone “in the balls”, suggesting it demonstrated an intention to attack Luis.
Defendant 1 denied this, saying he could not remember the message and suggesting it may have been a typing error or copied text.
The barrister further challenged his account of a later Discord app conversation in which Defendant 1 claimed his co-defendant had admitted stabbing Luis around the head.
Mr Forte pointed out that this alleged confession had not featured in Defendant 1’s earlier statements and suggested it had been invented to strengthen his defence.
Defendant 1 denied making it up, insisting Defendant 2 had told him he had stabbed Luis.
He claimed his co-defendant then became frustrated and told him he should not be talking.
Throughout the cross-examination, Defendant 1 rejected suggestions that he had helped plan the robbery, attacked Luis or carried a knife.
He maintained that he had neither stabbed Luis nor intended to hurt him.
Both defendants deny murder.
The trial continues.
