LEARN cycling skills and give to charity - that was the challenge accepted by 18 intrepid souls at the United Reformed Church in Farnham on January 18.
The cycle maintenance workshop was organised by Sue Shaw, Farnham U3A cycle group leader, who cajoled Bob Mercer and Jim Parker from Bikestart, together with Cycling UK volunteer technician Glenn Blake, to provide the expertise on the day.
Sessions focused on safety checks, gear setup, brake setup and tyres/punctures.
One participant, Maggie Ingham, said afterwards: “I thought the workshop was really something quite special. I learnt lots and almost need a repeat so it sticks in the old grey matter.”
Another, Charles Tonkin, added: “I enjoyed the course immensely. Thank the boys for their effort. It was greatly appreciated. Also thank you for helping with the organisation. I look forward to meeting up on the road when it gets warmer.”
The event raised £110 for The Source Young People’s Charity, an inclusive local Christian charity based in Aldershot that transforms the lives of young people aged up to 25 years living in north east Hampshire and the Surrey borders.
They are passionate about supporting and empowering young people particularly those who are isolated, vulnerable, struggling at school, in trouble with the law, have challenging family relationships, are in care, live on their own, are young parents or are homeless.
Bikestart, where Bob and Jim volunteer their time on Mondays and Thursdays, is a social enterprise set up by the charity.
It accepts donated bikes, which it services and sells on eBay, with all proceeds going to The Source. Bike servicing is also offered.
Anyone with bikes to donate, or that need servicing by qualified mechanics, or simply want to make a donation, visit the website www.bikestart.co.uk or call The Source on 01252 333330.
