A DOG nearly died after a gruesome encounter with a razor wire fence which residents allege has been laid "illegally" within metres of a public footpath bordering the Alton Road sandpit in Wrecclesham.

Janice Fitton's daughter-in-law was walking her two-year-old Jack Russell along the public footpath on the northern edge of the quarry when the dog wandered into the wire.

The dog suffered severe lacerations to his stomach area and puncture wounds, missing his femoral artery by millimetres.
