THREATENING clouds didn’t put off the crowds who came down to the Elstead Mill to watch the ducks race along the River Wey.
This event is run by the governors of St James Primary School to raise funds for residential trips and capital building projects at the school.
Headteacher Valerie Elliott said: “Everyone knows funding is tight. The only way governors can add to their fund is through donations and fundraising so this event is key to ensuring all children can take part in residential trips.”
Three hundred ducks raced in three heats with the first 20 past the post going through to the grand final. The overall winner of the £50 first prize and Duck plate trophy was won by Isabel with her duck called ‘Donald’.
Heat winners Harry and Sophie also received trophy egg cups. Prizes were personalised and donated by Ceramimagic.
The Giant Duck Race with 11 ducks sponsored by local businesses, with a number suitably dressed up in medical mask, curlers or flowers, saw Witherby Property Renovations take the prize.
The races were started from the middle of the river by brave school teachers and escorted down the river by former pupils.
Elstead Mill managers, Paul and Sian, were up early preparing the mouth-watering hog roast and getting the level and flow of the river right for the races.
St James would like to thank BBC’s The Voice contestant, Charley Blue, for taking time to paint faces during the event. Her live performance after lunch was a real treat for race goers and organisers.
The school children had made and decorated 3D ducks for the annual Best-Dressed-Duck Competition. Winners were Xanthie Kelly (Key Stage 1) and Marco Croft (Key Stage 2), with a special award for the funniest Duck design going to Ella.
Race organiser Carol Portman-Parsons added: “This event involves past governors and pupils and is one of the few school fundraisers where parents can just enjoy being with their children. Our thanks go to Fullers for sponsoring us and allowing us to use this wonderful setting.”
