Sir, – Digging Farnham's grave – that's what Waverley Borough Council and the developers will be doing if they are allowed to go ahead with this insensitive and unwanted scheme for East Street and the excavations and destruction this will involve. I was appalled to read in your July 1 edition that the plans require removal of such huge amounts of spoil in order to construct the underground car park. I am given to believe that the car park will cover an area of about of 41?2 acres and that the huge, heavy lorries needed to take away this spoil will be rolling into town off the "bomb site" at the rate of five or six every hour for up to nine months. The thought of all the dust, dirt, traffic chaos and utter disruption to our whole beautiful town is enough to give anyone nightmares! There are crucial questions we should be asking. For instance, will our lovely Victoria Gardens, right next to the site, survive? Has anyone considered the plight of some of our older and more vulnerable residents living in Falkner Court and Homepark House, who can now enjoy the tranquillity and beauty in the precious oasis of the gardens? What will they do when their homes and the space around is polluted by dust and noise? And this is just the beginning for Farnham. Can you imagine the effects of four whole years of noise and turmoil on the town and its people? I can see shoppers deserting in their droves for a more endurable retail experience and as for the shops we now have, how many of these will be able to stay the course. It really is about time that Waverley councillors faced up to the consequences of their grandiose scheme to make a profit out of Farnham. It looks as though the council is happy to run off with the money they intend to make from the East Street scheme and then leave the people to pay the dreadful price for the ruination of our town.
