YEAR 3 children at St Peter’s School in Wrecclesham put on hair nets and aprons to enjoy a practical sandwich-making workshop led by staff from Warburton’s bakers.

As part of their design and technology learning, children learnt that a sandwich can be a healthy snack providing they choose the right options.

Penny Goddin, Year 3 teacher, said: “Children discussed different bread choices and then selected fillings from the different food groups to create a balanced snack. White bread was not an option and salad was compulsory.

“Children also learnt about food hygiene and loved wearing the hairnet. They were also given a loaf of bread to share the experience at home.”

Nicky Hill, healthy schools leader, said: “It’s important for pupils to learn how to make healthy choices as to what they choose to eat.

“In addition to the statutory element of cookery in the curriculum, we enhance the learning with additional cookery lessons supporting other subject areas.

“As an example, children make a Ghanaian dish when they study Ghana in geography and they make a stir fry and spring rolls when they study the Shang Dynasty.

“It’s important that pupils learn to create dishes from fresh healthy ingredients and go beyond cake making.”

Mrs Goddin added: “We are very grateful to Warburtons for providing this learning experience. It was a fantastic finale to this unit of learning.”

St Peter’s has a specially designed children’s kitchen making appliances and surfaces accessible so they can work independently with minimal adult intervention.
