FARNHAM could yet be saved from mass development in years to come by a European Union directive designed to safeguard the habitats of wild birds, according to a prominent Conservative councillor.

In a paper sent to Waverley Borough Council's planning policy team and featured in this week's Herald letters page, Roger Steel – town and borough councillor for Farnham Moor Park and a former Waverley executive member – states the rationale used by the borough council in trying to impose the majority of the borough's development on Farnham is "unsound in case law".
