ALTON has been appointed a ‘business expert’ who grew up in the town in a bid to drive up investment in the area and lend a helping hand to struggling ventures.
Alton Town Council (ATC) and East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) have hired Julie McLatch, pictured, as the town’s Business Development Manager.
Her job will see her visit businesses to “understand what they like about working in Alton” and “discuss their concerns about the future”.
The role has been specifically created by the two councils to “attract investment and promote economic growth” to the area.
EHDC said Julie has years of experience in the area having headed “the marketing and business development function” at a law firm in Basingstoke.
“I’m delighted to be joining the team in Alton,” she said. “I grew up here and am passionate that it retains its charm and vibrancy while still being a great place to set up a business and to work. The town has changed a great deal during my life, and I am looking forward to working with businesses to ensure that commercial enterprises will choose to set up and stay here in the future.
“I’ve held a similar role with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, to help shape the agenda for a better town centre and focus on what businesses need to thrive in the area, and what their visitors would like to see to make them visit more often and stay for longer”
It is hoped her work will promote long-term success for local businesses, diversify what’s on offer in the town and drive down shop closures and frequently vacant premises.
Dean Phillips, EHDC’s new portfolio holder for Alton and deputy mayor at Alton Town Council, said the appointment fits well with the district’s business-minded ethos.
“Julie has a great track record in business development and really knows and loves the town, so she is the perfect person to help businesses in Alton thrive,” he said. “We are delighted to have her working alongside the Alton Town Council team at the town hall.
“Economic development in Alton is a key action arising from the Neighbourhood Plan process and East Hampshire District Council is committed to becoming one of most business-friendly councils in the country, so I am really pleased both councils can work together to help realise these aspirations.”
