Farnham could not have made a better start to their tough home match with Banstead on Saturday.

With the second ball of the day, Paddy Murphy bowled David Ward, Surrey's former hurricane hitter, with a vicious off-cutter.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got for Farnham and defeat in a one-sided match left them rooted to the bottom of the Premier Division.

Farnham's weakened side – no Alan Thorpe or Peter Dickinson – were powerless to prevent Banstead amassing 273-4 in just 52 overs.

The visitors raced to 58-1 in six overs and although Chic Stedman then reeled off 24 overs for 84 runs, the visitors were still able to run up an unassailable total. South African Zander De Bruyn helped himself to 109 and shared a parnership of 179 with Morris.

Rob Smith and Bob Brown put on 32 for Farnham's first wicket, but after that it was a steady procession back to the pavilion as De Bruyn and Vandrau picked up four wickets apiece.

Skipper Gary Clapham made a defiant 32 and the only other bright spot for Farnham was a promising debut by teenager Simon Hollingsworth.
