FARNHAM may be struggling near the foot of the table, but they gave a tactically astute display to frustrate promotion-hunting AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Town came away from Kingstonian's Kingsmeadow ground with a deserved point after sticking to their defensive guns in front of 2,834 partisan home supporters.

Those fanatical fans, so exuberant at the start, were reduced to near silence as Town ground out a deserved draw.

It was the most unexpected of results. Wimbledon had beaten Ash United 5-3 in midweek, while Farnham had taken an awful 7-1 thrashing at Withdean just two days before.

Wimbledon were perhaps weary after their efforts, and possibly disillusioned by Merton Council's decision to refuse them permission to ground-share with Tooting & Mitcham from next season.

Whatever the case, they seldom threatened to break down Farnham's disciplined formation and the visitors deserved credit for salvaging some pride after Thursday's humiliation.

Manager Dave Ward reverted to playing only one up front as his side set out to contain the AFC Dons' free-scoring attack.

And the plan worked, with sweeper Danny Brown having an outstanding game in Town's blanket defence.

Farnham even had Gareth Slessor stretchered off after just 40 minutes, but substitute Arnie Haskell came on to continue the tight marking job on top scorer Kevin Cooper.

In a game of mainly half-chances, the best opening fell to Cooper who blazed over the top with only 'keeper Mike Brawley to beat.

Strike partner Ally Russell also missed badly, lifting the ball into the stand from very close range.

But Farnham also had their moments, the best coming after 13 minutes when a 20-yard effort from Adam Rivett was parried by Ray Merry.

The second half continued with Farnham prepared to soak up pressure and rely on the occasional counter-attack.

Their good work was almost undone on the hour when a poor clearance by Brawley went straight to Cooper, but Paul Brooks made a superb tackle to save the situation.

Farnham maintained their concentration and when Cooper jumped to win a Sean Daly corner, Duncan Evans was there to clear the header off the line.

With time running out and a desperate Wimbledon throwing men forward, Farnham contined to defend manfully and they deserved their luck in the final minute when Gavin Bolger's shot hit the base of the post.

Farnham held out and became only the third side to prevent Wimbledon scoring at home this season.
