A NEW Farnham mayor was elected for 2018/19 at Farnham Town Council’s (FTC) Annual Meeting.

David Attfield, town councillor for Weybourne and Badshot Lea, was nominated by leader of Waverley Borough Council (WBC) and Past Town Consort, Julia Potts, with councillor David Beaman as seconder.

David was the Mayor of Farnham in 2006/7 and has been a member of FTC for 15 years. He and his wife Anne were born in Badshot Lea and have lived in the village all their lives.

David is a volunteer with Care Farnham and the 1st Farnham Girls’ Brigade. He likes to spend any other spare time with his dogs and horses, and spent much of his career working for BT. He is the only Liberal Democrat councillor at FTC, showing how apolitical the council is.

Nominating the new mayor, Julia Potts said: “I’ve known David since 2011, and to me he epitomises what we should all strive to be as town councillors.

“David is someone whom you can turn to for advice and that is what you will get, sound, no-nonsense advice, someone who is always a great leveller and that is something many of us need.

“David has been a great deputy mayor this year to Mike and I, and both he and Anne have been really supportive.”

David said: “I am humbled and privileged to be invited to represent this wonderful town as mayor. I’m looking forward to meeting as many members of Farnham’s community as I can over the next year.”

David’s chosen charity for his mayoral year is Garner’s Goes Bananas, the Farnham Scouts’ fundraising project to refurbish and extend the activity centre at their Tilford campsite.

The Scouts are well on their way to the goal of £133,000 needed for the work at Garner’s Field. The site, an old gravel working, has been used by the youth of Farnham since 1976 and the project will help pave the way for the next 40 years and beyond.

District Commissioner Philip German said he was “delighted to the hear the news” and hoped the publicity and local support would mean he “could stop dressing up as a banana”.

Jill Hargreaves was elected as deputy mayor for 2018/19 and councillor Carole Cockburn remains as leader of FTC.
