THE countdown to Christmas will officially begin this week when the town's festive lights are turned on by a special guest.

Hundreds of people are expected to gather around The Square today (Friday) for the big switch-on.

The Square and surrounding roads will be closed from 3pm as organisers put the final touches on this year's festivities.

The event usually coincides with Children In Need and has been overseen for the last two years by the Petersfield Festivals team.

But this year's event is being organised by the Association of Petersfield Businesses and will be supported by Dreams Come True.

The Liphook charity, which provides unforgettable experiences for terminally and seriously ill children, is delighted to be involved with the switch on.

"We're thrilled to be so involved in this memorable event," said Sue Fowler, head of marketing for Dreams Come True.

"Although we're a national charity we work closely with local groups so it's nice to get involved in this and tell the crowds what we do.

"It's the first time we've been involved in a Christmas lights turn on, so we're equally excited about that too."

Town mayor Peter Marshall will be playing a part but the event should also be one to remember for someone closely involved with the charity.

The fun starts at 6pm when a band from The Petersfield School will play a 30-minute warm up set to get people in festive mood.

A second TPS band will play a 15-minute "countdown" set at 6.45pm before the lights are switched on at 7pm.

Revellers can tuck into hot chestnuts and mulled wine while fairground rides, refreshments and a choir have also been lined up.

The second TPS band will also play a "celebration" set after the switch on, with entertainment continuing in The Square until 8pm.
