THE BISHOPS Meadow Trust has viewed with some satisfaction the sight of the meadowland under up to three feet of water at times over the past fortnight.

The extent of the floodwaters has reinforced its importance in protecting the town centre from flooding.

"The meadows are doing their job, which is to soak up water, holding it back so that it is released gently and Farnham isn't flooded," commented Jim Munro, spokesman for the trustees, adding that it was the use of such land for development which had proved such a disaster in the South West and elsewhere.
