HOLLYCOMBE Steam is looking forward to re-opening at Easter.
With a shorter winter turnaround than previous years, the team of restorers have been kept busy maintaining railway engines and fairground rides in time for the spring season.
Karen Feltham said: “We’ve repainted our six steam swing boats and restored the artwork on the famous Big Wheel and on the shutters and stairways of the Razzle Dazzle - the world’s oldest white knuckle ride.
“The team of volunteers is looking forward to re-opening weekend, when the sound of organ music and wisps of steam fill the air once again.”
Last year marked a very busy year for Hollycombe, which saw the introduction following restoration of the world’s oldest mechanically operating fairground ride, Mr Field’s Steam Circus, while Jerry M and fairground engine Emperor both celebrated 120th birthdays.
Hollycombe trustee Brian Gooding said: “Visitors have responded very positively to our restoration works and also our ‘buy once and return again for free as many times as you wish during a calendar year’ ticket, which saw record sales last year. Families enjoy the opportunity of coming back to Hollycombe throughout the seasons and enjoy the many events we stage. We are very much seen as a ‘three generation attraction’, with grandparents, their children and grandchildren being able to enjoy the variety of rides and attractions across the site.”
Visitors can also enjoy woodland walks, with displays of daffodils, camellias, magnolias and early flowering rhododendrons, and 2016 is the national “Year of the English Garden” – Hollycombe’s setting on top of Iron Hill commands wonderful views across the South Downs is perfect.
The charity behind its work needs more volunteers who share its passion and love for steam.
