HEADLEY Horticultural Society held its autumn show on September 9, when the largest number of members for the past two years displayed top-quality flowers and produce.

“This year we grew the fuchsia snowdrop from a plug plant, supplied by the society, which gave a pretty display as you entered the hall,” show secretary Janette Bell said.

“There was a good display of dahlias, which looked healthy despite the recent rain. The vegetable classes were well supported apart from lettuce and plums. The flower-arranging classes had beautiful arrangements and the diploma for floral art was won by Jennifer Mitchell for her interpretation of Bollywood - a brightly coloured array of flowers. We have been asking for new flower arrangers to enter a novice class. This month Rosemary Dagger won with her display in an unusual container.

“The domestic classes were well represented, and the winner of the diploma of merit was Jennifer Mitchell for her Bakewell tart.

“There was an imaginative selection of photographs, particularly the ideas for the category titled His & Hers - two photographs complementing one another.

“There were five new members staging entries for the first time and I am pleased to say all of them were placed in the categories they entered.”

Jill Howard-Duff and Christine Leonard prepared lunch for the judges and stewards. They served tea and cakes to the afternoon visitors.
