THE Farnham independence movement has taken off, with the launch last Saturday of the Non-partisan Petition Group's (NPG) petition to the Queen for Farnham to become a district authority.

In just a few hours on a windy, cold and rainy day in central Farnham, it raised more than 500 signatures.

The campaign will now get going in earnest, with more than 140 volunteer canvassers setting out around town.

NPG chairman Mike Bryan said: "We've sensed an amazingly uplifting spirit of co-operation to give Farnham a better future."
