WONDERFUL exhibits of fruit, flowers, foliage, floral art and photography as well as vegetables, cakes and a cup of tea, welcomed visitors to Chiddingfold Horticultural Society’s autumn show.

Club vice-chairman Robert Walker said: “The exhibits were an excellent example of the season of mellow fruitfulness and there were more entries than last year with some members producing a single entry and others 30.”

For the spring, summer and autumn shows, Philip Underwood won The Victor Laudorum trophies and Chiddingfold Challenge Cup; Ciss Denyer won The Tait Cup for flower arranging, Jane Hainsworth-Birt won the Photographic Cup, and Lily Turner won the Junior Decorative Award.

Sheila Rapley won the Colonel and Mrs Bullock Cup for most points in the summer and autumn shows and Philip Underwood was runner-up, winning the Searle Challenge Cup.

The autumn show winners for vegetables was Sheila Rapley, who was awarded the Tickner Cup, with Philip Underwood again the runner-up, winning the Nathan Cup.

Myrtle Ballard won the Barlow Cup and the Mrs Stein Cup, and Sheila Rapley took the Phillips Cup.

Annabel Chaplin collected the Gibbs Cup for the best pot plant. Jane Hainsworth-Birt was very successful in receiving the Jack Whale Trophy for her fuchsias, the Sydenhurst Cup, for cookery and the Wildflower Trophy, for photography.

Pat Freemantle’s attractive arrangement of flowers gained her the Hazelbridge Challenge Cup.

Children’s exhibits showed originality and Gigi Harding won the Autumn Shield Trophy for her decorated wooden spoon while Theo Quirt was awarded the Pauline Thompson Cup for his plant grown from a pip.

Lily Turner won a Diploma of Merit for her garden on a plate

The Worshipful Company of Gardeners Diplomas went to Sheila Rapley for her shallots; Annabel Chaplin for her eating apples, and Ciss Denyer won a Floral Art Certificate for flower arranging.
