POLICE in Haslemere are urging residents to be extra vigilant and to review their home security following a burglary at a property in Tanners Lane, Haslemere, last Tuesday. The break-in happened between 11am and 4.45pm while the house was unoccupied. The intruder's entry into the house was made easier because a key was left in the lock of an outside door. Valuable items were stolen during the break-in, including two Mont Blanc pens, pearl jewellery, silver cutlery and a solid gold medal. The total value of the property stolen is estimated to be around £2,700. Later on that evening, at around 8.15pm, an intruder was disturbed trying to break into a house on the A286 at Brook and police are linking this offence to the Haslemere burglary. Barry Jutsum, from Surrey Police, said: "We are targeting burglars in the borough and are appealing for information so we can bring the offender to justice. "We would urge anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the time of the offence, or has any information about these crimes, to contact us. "We would like to remind householders to take a few steps to avoid becoming a victim of crime. "Burglars don't like locked windows because breaking glass attracts attention. They don't like security deadlocks on doors because they can't open them, even from the inside, and they have to get out through a window. "Home security - such as good locks and deadlocks, security lighting and burglar alarms - is the best way to reduce your chances of being burgled. "Please help yourselves and take responsibility for your possessions. "And remember if a thief takes advantage of your open window or door, this could affect your insurance claim." Anyone with information is asked to contact Barry Jutsum at Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously and free of charge on 0800 555 111.
