Sir, – Further to your item "Anger over... more Farnborough Flights" (Farnham Herald, October 28), TAG Aviation, the Swiss business jet operator at Farnborough aerodrome, has indeed announced proposals to double weekend and bank holiday aircraft movements from 2,500 to 5,000 annually. If approved by Rushmoor Council, this proposal would mean an average of 100 movements per weekend, many of which pass over Farnham and the surrounding villages between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm. Experience over the past three years has shown Sunday afternoons to be the busiest period. Clearly, the demands of a relatively small number of "busy" executives must have priority at the expense of the thousands of residents whose Sunday afternoons and bank holidays will be further disturbed. In addition to commercial flights, the skies over the Farnham area at weekends are frequently populated by private traffic to and from Blackbushe and other neighbouring airfields. The increased noise nuisance and risk resulting from TAG's proposal, if implemented, would be unacceptable to most residents. The original limit of 2,500 weekend movements annually was set by the Local Plan policy FA2.2A and accepted by TAG in 2000 to minimise disturbance to local residents, the total number of movements per year being limited to 28,000. Rushmoor Borough Council is inviting comments from those affected by this proposal and these should be sent to Planning Services, Rushmoor Borough Council, Farnborough Road, Farnborough, Hants, GU14 7JU quoting reference 05/00640/FUL before Friday, November 18, 2005. More information can be had from Rushmoor RBC on 01252 398701. The recent PR exercise using the Reading- based Green Issues company and held at St Mark's Church Hall in Farnborough on October 22 and 29 also invited residents' comments but this feedback was commissioned by TAG for its internal use and, as required by the Data Protection Act 1998, should not be passed on to any third party such as Rushmoor RBC. The next crucial meeting of the Farnborough Aerodrome Consultative Committee is scheduled for Thursday, November 17. These twice-yearly meetings are open to the public and held at the BAe Systems building, Government House Road, Farnborough, commencing at 2 pm. This could be the last opportunity to make your views felt on the expansion of Farnborough directly to your local council representatives, bearing in mind that central government policy is to increase flights wherever possible.
