‘BLOOD, Roses and Elephants, the art and history of St Albans Abbey’ is the intriguing title of a lecture to be given by the Rt Rev Dr Christopher Herbert, former Bishop of St Albans, tomorrow (Wednesday) at the St Joan’s Centre, Farnham.

St Alban is claimed to be the first Christian martyr, whose special symbol is a red rose – “Among the roses of the martyrs, brightly shines Saint Alban” in the words of an ancient prayer. He was a third century citizen of the Roman city of Verulanium who was converted to the then forbidden religion of Christianity, and executed on a hill described as “adorned with wild flowers of every kind”.

This story should explain the blood and roses of the title of Dr Herbert’s talk, but those wanting to find out where the elephants come into it must go to the lecture and find out.

The talk is presented by the Farnham Public Art Trust and will be at the St Joan’s Centre, Tilford Road, from 7.30pm for a 8pm start. Tickets are £6 per person (students £2) payable at the door.
