A MAN is in a "serious condition" in hospital after an unprovoked assault left him lying semi-conscious in Petersfield High Street. Police are tracking two men wanted in connection with the assault which happened shortly before 10-45 pm on Sunday. And CCTV footage shows a passerby who intervened and stopped the attack on the 37 year old.
Detective constable Ian Berry said: "This is an apparently unprovoked assault.
"We are particularly keen to speak to the man who stopped the assault. He was walking in the High Street with a woman, and we believe he may hold vital information about the case.
"We think that other passers-by and motorists may have witnessed this assault too, and we would urge them to come forward."
Both of the attackers were white men with shaved or cropped hair. One was wearing a white short-sleeved t-shirt, trousers or jeans and dark footwear.
The second man was wearing a dark-coloured short-sleeved top, dark tracksuit bottoms with a vertical white stripe and white trainers. Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw two men matching the description in the High Street before the attack.
Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage of the High Street at the time of the incident, but would still like anyone with any information to contact Alton CID on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
