DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in the early hours of Sunday, June 1. The incident was at around 12.45am when two men wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered attacked a 22-year-old in Manor Road. The victim suffered a fractured leg and ankle. Officers believe one of the men may have been carrying a sledgehammer. Detective Constable Richard Skillern of Alton CID said: "This was a serious and vicious assault that was unusual for Alton. "Nearby residents may have heard the attack: we would urge any witnesses or anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to contact police as soon as possible."
