ALTON mayor Pam Jones will lead the town’s annual Act of Remembrance on Sunday during a service at the Cairn War Memorial, outside the Assembly Rooms on Crown Hill.

Organised by the Alton branch of the Royal British Legion and Alton Town Council, the ceremony will start with a march of uniformed and youth groups, starting at 10.30am from the Market Square before heading down Market Street and up the High Street to the war memorial.

There they will join members of the community in paying their respects to those who have given their lives in the service of their country. There will be the two-minute silence at 11am.

After the service, the parade will march back to the Market Square to be dismissed.

Due to the growing popularity of the annual occasion, and to ensure the safety of all those gathering in the vicinity of Crown Hill, a road closure will be extended to take in Normandy Street from the roundabout at the Courthouse to Crown Hill, as well as the High Street from Church Street to Turk Street.

The closure will be in force from 10.30am until around 11.45am and motorists are asked to seek an alternative route.

In addition, Market Street and Market Square will be closed and car owners are reminded that it is unlawful to leave their vehicles in the Market Square overnight.

A spokesman for East Hampshire District Council has confirmed that parking charges in all town centre car parks will be suspended on Sunday until 12.30pm as people pay their respects to our fallen war heroes.
