A CAMPAIGN for new railings in Wrecclesham has been backed by Foreign Secretary and South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt.
Following an accident on The Street where a “car went out of control” at around 9.30pm on August 28, the old railings had to be removed.
Although no-one was hurt in the collision, which happened between the Bear & Ragged Staff pub and The Royal Oak pub, it “took the railings out” and caused debris to “smash” into the house behind.
The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that damage to the listed property included its two front walls, which had to be rebuilt, a split front door, a smashed window, and a crushed gas pipe.
Railings outside the property were replaced with “flimsy” plastic barriers, which are “putting both my property and pedestrians at risk”, according to the resident.
It is also close to where mum-of-two Amy Harris was killed last September when she was walking on the pavement between Echo Barn Lane and Quennells Hill.
In what has been a long, drawn out process, the Wrecclesham community has been lobbying to get new railings since August.
Although the owner of the property said he appreciated that they had to be custom made, he said it fet that they should be a priority and contacted Mr Hunt “out of desperation”.
After meeting last week, the homeowner said: “He’s listening to what we’re doing. To take time out on Friday given his busy schedule - it was very kind for him to do that, we just hope he can unblock what is happening.”
Following his visit, Mr Hunt went on to post on Facebook.
“Big frustration in Wrecclesham in getting replacement railings following a road traffic accident.
“I met with a local Wrecclesham resident today who has been more than patient. We must get this replaced as a priority.”
Mr Hunt has since met with Surrey County Council leader David Hodge, who said: “I attended a meeting at Mr Hunt’s office in Westminster on Monday evening with my cabinet member Colin Kemp and this matter was discussed.
“Colin gave Mr Hunt the latest update and he was happy with the progress.”
A date for the railings to be installed is still to be confirmed.
