FARNHAM Maltings had a lucky escape last week after strong winds brought down a huge willow tree onto the historic building.

The tree, which has provided shade in the Maltings’ riverside garden for many years, was uprooted at around 11am on Tuesday, January 26.

It fell against Maltings’ director Gavin Stride’s office, who was away from his desk at the time, and the Riverside cafe, blocking the bridge across the river.

“It was quite a shock but incredibly no one was hurt and no damage was caused,” said Maltings spokesman Jon Mileman.

“Tree surgeons were called immediately and were able to clear the path in a couple of hours.

“It was decided to remove the remaining upright sections of the tree for safety and we will be looking to prepare the garden for the summer over the next few months.

“No decision has yet been made on whether to replace the willow.”
