OVER the last two years there has been no improvement in speeding figures on roads leading in and out of the village centre, parish councillors have been told.

Speed Watch volunteer Eddie Trotter told parish councillors that he clocked 3,494 speeding vehicles over a two-year period on Headley Road, London Road, Haslemere Road, Midhurst Road, Portsmouth Road and Longmoor Road, all of which have a 30mph limit.

During the same period, 37,771 vehicles were logged by the Speed Watch team, with the highest levels of speeding recorded on London Road.

Mr Trotter pointed out that, regrettably, Hampshire Constabulary, which is fed the figures automatically, had given no feedback on the latest batch of data.

He also revealed that possible speed measures have been ruled out due to lack of funding by East Hampshire District Council, which also receives regular reports from the voluntary group, whose presence on the roadside appears to hold little deterrent to motorists, who show no inclination to slow down.

Mr Trotter is appealing for more volunteers to come forward to help the scheme continue.

Liphook Speed Watch got under way in July 2014 with teams from neighbouring villages in Headley and Kingsley. All three share the speed detection equipment for four months each year.

Speed Watch started in Hampshire in 2011 and has 60 schemes with approximately 750 volunteers – and continues to grow.

Speed Watch is a national awareness – not enforcement – programme managed by the police with the aim of contributing towards safer neighbourhoods by monitoring traffic speeds, which are logged and reported to the local force.
