A NONAGENARIAN from Medstead will do his bit for the Olympic effort in Bournemouth next week.

Proud Tony Chivers, 92, will be the oldest runner on the day as the Olympic torch makes its way through the Dorset seaside resort next Friday en route to London's Olympic Stadium.

The London 2012 organising committee received tens of thousands of exceptional nominations and the competition to be named as a torch bearer was incredibly tough.

Mr Chivers secured his moment in history 63 years after winning the 5,000m for Great Britain versus France in Paris and 62 years after winning a bronze medal in the three-mile event at the Auckland New Zealand Empire Games (now known as the Commonwealth Games).
