THE long-touted pedestrianisation of Farnham town centre was put back on the table this week after MP Jeremy Hunt promised a referendum on his ambitious plans this June.

Mr Hunt has suggested pedestrianisation as a solution to Farnham's traffic problems since his election as MP for South West Surrey in 2007, and he has enlisted the help of local architects to draw up his latest plans.

He told The Herald: "I have long thought that Farnham could be one of the most beautiful towns in the South East – if it dealt with the scourge of traffic in the town centre.

"While no one disagrees with the principle of pedestrianisation, some people do have concerns about whether it would be practical. So I have been working with local experts to come up with a viable scheme."
