A CIVIL war is brewing in Waverley after Farnham Town Council added its voice to those supporting plans for up to 1,800 new homes at Dunsfold Park aerodrome.
Many representatives in Farnham, including councillors and planning watchdog the Farnham Society, have long called for housing on Waverley’s largest brownfield site to relieve the pressure to build on the borough’s green spaces.
And now town councillors have agreed to support Dunsfold Airport Ltd and Rutland Ltd’s bid for 1,800 new homes, space for new businesses, amenity space and supporting infrastructure on the aerodrome south of Godalming.
In its formal response, the town council said: “Farnham Town Council strongly supports this application which is in keeping with the Government Policy of filing brownfield sites and covers all aspects of sustainability.”
This contrasts with the stance of parish councils in the immediate area surrounding Dunsfold Park, coming just a week after 11 local authorities joined forces to request Greg Clarke, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, call in the application.
In their letter to Mr Clarke, the group of objecting councils complained Dunsfold Park is an “isolated and unsustainable” site for housing and urged the minister to take the decision out of the hands of Waverley Borough Council.
