A DEVELOPER has applied for permission to build more homes at the Garden Style Nursery site in Wrecclesham, just metres from where mum-of-two Amy Harris tragically lost her life last month.
Waverley Borough Council’s joint planning committee granted Bewley Homes permission to build 65 homes on the 12-acre greenfield site in May 2016, despite the widespread opposition of neighbouring residents.
However, following the nursery’s recent relocation to a new purpose-built home alongside Forest Lodge Garden Centre, Bewley Homes has re-applied for 72 new homes on the site.
It comes after objectors to the original application expressed fears the development would add to the traffic problems on the A325 soon to be exacerbated by the 3,000-plus home Bordon eco-town development.
Responding in May last year, councillors recognised the scheme would increase traffic on the A325 but agreed the benefits of the scheme providing much-needed housing in the borough outweighed the “minor” adverse impacts, and voted overwhelming in favour of the application.
The A325’s traffic problems have come under renewed scrutiny in recent weeks, however, following the death of 38-year-old professional dog walker Amy Harris on September 19.
Mrs Harris was walking a client’s puppy on the pavement in Wrecclesham Hill between the junctions with Quennels Hill and Echo Barn Lane, when she was hit by a van at around 11.30am - killing both Amy and the dog.
Following the fatality, MP Jeremy Hunt and councillors joined residents last week in calling for urgent safety improvements on the A325 to prevent further tragedies.
Responding to Mr Hunt’s calls for “urgent support” on the matter, Surrey county council leader David Hodge told The Herald: “Safety cameras are one of a number of measures that can be introduced when there has been a history of collisions where speeding is a problem.
“Following the police’s investigation into the cause of the accident we will look carefully at the best way forward to ensure the road is safe but at this difficult time our thoughts are with Mrs Harris’ family and friends.”

• An online fundraising page set up in Mrs Harris’ memory has now raised more than £7,000 for charity Challengers, which provides play opportunities for disabled children across the Farnham area.
The page, www.justgiving.com/fundraising/amy
harrismemorial, was set up by the mum of two’s family “to ensure some good can come from Amy’s death”. It adds: “Amy was a loving and caring wife and mother to two children and will be missed terribly.”
