An election will be held to elect a new borough councillor in The Bourne, Farnham, if just two electors request one before December 22.

The ‘casual vacancy’ in one of The Bourne’s two Waverley Borough Council seats has occurred after the death of Farnham Residents councillor Roger Blishen last month.

An election will also be held to elect Cllr Blishen’s replacement at Farnham Town Council should ten electors request one, also before December 22.

A Waverley Borough Council statement reads: “Notice is hereby given, in accordance with section 87(2) of the Local Government Act 1972, that a casual vacancy has occurred in the office of councillor for the Farnham Bourne Borough ward and a casual vacancy has arisen in the office of councillor for Farnham Town Council – Bourne Ward, following the death of Councillor Roger Blishen.

“An election will be held if TWO electors from within the borough request for office of councillor for the Farnham Bourne borough ward, in writing or by email, that the Proper Officer commence the procedure to hold an election to fill the vacancy.

“An election will be held if TEN electors from the town council ward of Bourne request, by Thursday, December 22, 2022 (14 days excluding dies non, after the date of this notice), in writing or by email, that the Proper Officer commence the procedure to hold an election to fill the vacancy.”

If an election were to be called, it would most likely take place in February 2023 and the seat would then be contested again with all other borough and town seats, at the 2023 local elections on May 4.

Requests in writing or email for either vacancy can be made to: The Proper Officer Waverley Borough Council The Burys Godalming GU7 1HR or by email to: [email protected]
